Red Ribbion Express-IInd Run in Orissa 2nd to 24th May,2010 |
Background:
The HIV/AIDS epidemic is not a health issue alone; it is also a social & economical issue. At present HIV/AIDS mostly found among youth and about 90% are in the age group of 15-49 years.
In the first phase, Red Ribbon Express visited Orissa from 1st - 14th April, 2008, which covered seven rail stations i.e. Balasore, Bhadrak, Mancheswar-Bhubaneswar, Berhampur, Angul, Sambalpur & Bolangir.
During this period, around 2.74 lakhs people directly interacted with RRE. Out of that, 1,657 persons were sensitized on HIV/AIDS in the auditorium-cum-conference coach and 502 STI/RTI patients were treated.
Red Ribbon Express (RRE):
The Red Ribbon Express (RRE) is a multi-sectoral project to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS and promote safe behavioral practices. The main objectives are:
- disseminating information regarding primary prevention services
- developing and understanding about the infection to reduce stigma & discrimination against People Living with HIV/AIDS
- strengthening people’s knowledge about the measures to be taken to prevent getting HIV/AIDS and
- adopting preventive health habits & lifestyle
- The journey of RRE already been flagged off on 01.12.09 (World AIDS Day – 2009) from Delhi. It is a National Campaign to mainstream the issue of HIV/AIDS.
- The target group of general population focusing youth groups women groups such as, SHGs, AWWs, ASHA, ANM; Adolescents students from schools & colleges, PRI Members, Out of school youth , Health Care Providers , Opinion & Policy makers etc.
RRE consists of eight coaches, out of which four are Exhibition Coaches, one Auditorium cum Conference;
one counseling cum Medical Services and last two coaches are for Sleeper, Office and Dining & Pantry. The train coach details are:
- Exhibition
- Displays on bio-medical aspects of HIV and AIDS, including interactive touch screens and 3-D models (Coach No. – I)
- Display of educational material with focus on HIV/AIDS and associated care, support and treatment services. (Coach No. – II)
- Display of educational material with focus on HIV within the socio-developmental context for enabling environment for stigma & discrimination free communities (inter-sectoral/ mainstreaming approach) (Coach No. – III)
- Display of information on general health, hygiene and communicable diseases such as swine flu, TB and RCH services (Coach No. – IV)
- Auditorium cum Conference
Arrangements for orientation/ sensitization of selected groups such as PRIs, AWWs, SHGs, youth and women. A group of 60 people can be oriented in one batch with three sessions planned per day. It will have LCD projector to take sessions on HIV/AIDS. (Coach No. – V)
- Counseling cum Medical Services
Having six cabins - 4 counseling cabins and two doctor’s cabins for providing counseling and syndromic treatment for STI and RTI cases. There will be no HIV testing facility on board. However, provisions for referral services to the nearby ICTC and other care & support services on HIV/AIDS will be ensured. SACS may organize counseling and testing facility at a suitable point near the platform. (Coach No. – VI)
- Sleeper coach
This coach is meant for crew member, M & E staff, visiting NACO officials and SACS officials.
